Tire and Wheel System PLC Upgrade

Due to the march of time, our customer found that the material support for an existing Tire and Wheel System that was built around the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 platform was becoming an issue.  In order to maintain their manufacturing commitments, it became necessary to upgrade their multi-panel control system to the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix platform.

This project required an understanding of the data-type differences between the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 and ControlLogix platforms.  An additional challenge was caused by the different communication networks used by this system.

This project included:

  • Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 1756-L73 processor
  • Rockwell Software’s Studio 5000
  • Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus HMI
  • Rockwell Software’s FactoryTalk View ME (FTView ME)
  • Allen-Bradley 1771 to 1756 Conversion components.
  • Allen-Bradley RIO and DataHighway communications using the 1756-RIO and 1756-DHRIO modules.
  • Allen-Bradley 1756-MVI communication module

As a Rockwell Automation System Integrator (RASI) with Allen-Bradley PLC-5, ControlLogix, and PanelView experience we were able to develop a phased approach that reduced the overall downtime caused by this implementation.  The result of this phased implementation was that the department was able to meet their manufacturing targets.

An Overview of the Mitsubishi PLC Programmer

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is used to interact with inputs and outputs in order to assist in machines functioning with automation.  A PLC is basically a computer with a processor that interacts with the outside world....
