Tank Farm Control System

A global automotive manufacturer required a turn-key hardware and software controls solution for an automated system to monitor the ventilation and provide safety functions in a fluid-fill (non-gasoline) environment to ensure a safe environment for its employees.

The primary design challenges involved the following:

  • Retrofitting the existing fluid-fill systems.
  • Retrofitting the existing ventilation systems.
  • Incorporating the newly installed 1234yf coolant.

Using Allen-Bradley products, provide a flexible design scheme that could be modified, as required, and incorporated into additional plants with a minimum of re-design.

Provide a design that met the applicable safety requirements.

This system, in order to meet the applicable safety standards, incorporated the Allen-Bradley GuardLogix PLC, Allen-Bradley 1791ES Safety I/O modules, and an Ethernet/IP network.  Additionally, this project included a PanelView PLUS HMI for an operator interface.

The major components of this system included:

  • Allen Bradley L71S GuardLogix PLC
  • Allen Bradley 2711P-T15 Panelview Plus HMI
  • Allen Bradley 1791ES Safety I/O
  • Allen Bradley 1756-EN2T Ethernet/IP Network

Our experience as a Rockwell Automation System Integrator (RASI) allowed also to develop a solution that exceeded the customers’ expectations.  In February 2020, we have installation this solution in the customers sixth plan in North America.

An Overview of the Mitsubishi PLC Programmer

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is used to interact with inputs and outputs in order to assist in machines functioning with automation.  A PLC is basically a computer with a processor that interacts with the outside world....
